What lack of luck have you had?  You can use Oracle EBU or RMAN and won't have 
to shutdown databases.  Lot's of people use them.

Hi
We are running H70 IBM RS6000servers IBM AIX 4.3 alongwith SSA Disk
Subsystem and Tapelibrary model 7337.
Tivoli Storage Manager version 3.7.3.0

We want to run nightly backup....
shutdown oracle, backup 65 GB database to tapes.

Does anyone have ideas and scripts. We have been doing trial and error an
dhave very little luck.
