First let me say, I don't want to spread out the discussion to non *SM
topics. For those not concerned with server restores on AIX, the
following may be from interest anyway.

Yes and no! Yes, you could restore easyly a image to the same or nearly
the same hardware. But principially the mechanisms from mksysb and AIX
support more. From nearly the beginning you could switch from older to
mutch newer hardware. But you had to have the appropriate software media
available (tape or later cdrom) to install newer device support. That
was complex, too. No, because NIM gives you the possibility to
centralize the needed software and uses the same basic mechanisms for
network install _and_ software updates. Performing reinstalls is only
one possible task. The basic functions like loading the kernel and
getting working filesystems during installs works quite as usual via
tftp and nfs. But - not unusal with AIX - you only have to worry about
in case of troubleshooting.
