Sound reasons.

Well, you still may consider a work-around
I successfully used a time ago:

Your currents server exports data to a device class of type FILE,
which has rather small size limit (maybe 1 GB or so)
and is defined on a directory mounted on target NT server.
While it works, a script on the (target) NT server
checks whether there are new but not locked files
in directory corresponding to the FILE device class.
If file(s) are found, they are backup by (any) simple
backup program on local tape, and deleted afterwards.

The import works inversly,
the script reads single files from tape as long as there is
space available,
the import process is running thus reading this files one after another...

Well, looks an innocent play, but it works -
might be an alternative if the recabling of your ATL should
cause problems.
