Neil,

principially you're right. You would have to use savevg to get a backup
of your ADSMVG. I think, the people who wrote the start-up-guide don't
mentioned this, because normally there should be only the ADSM database,
log and diskpools. The database should be backuped by dbbackup and the
diskpools should be backuped by a tape copypool. Therefor there is no
direct necessity to backup the whole ADSMVG. And, you mentioned it
yourself, there is usally a problem of tape-capacity. I would use
mirroring of db, log and data-volumes and rely on ADSM internal recovery
methods. If mirroring via LVM or ADSM isn't practical, use of a raid5
configuration via SSA or equivalent product is another option.
