Out of memory error - part 2
2000-03-15 15:09:47
Thanks to those of you who responded to my question yesterday
about out of memory. Here is a followup:
my original ulimit values were:
#ulimit -a
time(seconds) unlimited
file(blocks) 40097151
data(kbytes) 131072
stack(kbytes) 32768
memory(kbytes) 32768
coredump(blocks) 2097151
nofiles(descriptors) 2000
I changed them to:
#ulimit -a
time(seconds) unlimited
file(blocks) unlimited *****
data(kbytes) 131072
stack(kbytes) 32768
memory(kbytes) 512000 *****
coredump(blocks) 2097151
nofiles(descriptors) 2000
after these changes, I still got the error. Note that this
client has 3 gigabytes of memory. The /home filesystem I
am trying to back up is about 30 gigs with 1,200,000 files
in it.
Finally I tried the backup with -memoryefficient=yes and then
it ran fine. What is that option really doing? Any other ideas
about how to make this work without that option? Does my
memory ulimit really need to be more than 512 megs?
Thank you,
Bob Stoller
