Gerald - This gets back to the old issue of *SM encryption in general, and
         whether each application should do encryption to protect network
transfers or whether the transport medium should do it and save all the
appls a lot of work.
    In the case of dialup, I should think you would want to use ssh, VPN, or
other secure link protocol as standard practice, which would address your
need.
