Re: virtual volumes vs offsite storage
2000-03-03 07:47:31
That is one problem with virtual volumes. The client (server 1) understands
the data in a virtual volume that is being held by another server. The
server (server 2 - holder of the virtual volume) has a container file and
does not understand what is in it. So to reclaim, the data must flow back
to server 1 and then back to server two for storage. There is no lock
condition because server 2 does not do any reclaim on the virtual volumes it
holds. It can be doing reclaim on its virtual volumes that reside on server
1. Note that this is 4 times the traffic - from server 2 to server 1 and
back for server 1 reclaim - from server 1 to server 2 and back for server
two reclaim.
Well that is probably confusing enough.
