Martin - Conditions like this can be caused by hardware problems: you generally
         can't get results from an "upstream" operation like a Cancel in any
operating environment if I/O is pending on the device.  Check the hardware,
any hardware error logs, dsm error logs, etc. and try to figure out what it
may be hung up on.
