You may want to use compression if you have fast clients and slow networks.
I've done quite a bit of testing to determine if compression would result in
lower elapsed backup times.  In none of my tests did compression reduce the
elapsed time to backup.  Now, of course compression will reduce the network
traffic, but if you have plenty of network, who cares?  Also, I've not
played with a bunch of clients simultaneously compressing and backing up
data.  A test like that might result in an overall reduction in elapsed
time, but I doubt it.

In general, leave compression off.  Most tape hardware is going to compress
data and that compression is generally more efficient than software
compression at the client.
