3.1.2.40 has problems with hanging expiration processes.  I am running
3.1.2.42 (fixtest) on Solaris and AIX, without problems.  My AIX server is
at 4.3.2.0.  You do not need to upgrade your clients at the same time.

As for going back, since the DB is almost always "upgraded", it usually
involves restoring your DB from the last backup taken at 3.1.2.30, which
means you loose all backups under the new version.

So, in summary:
    1. 3.1.2.40 is not a good version
    2. You do not have to upgrade clients
    3. Going back is a bad option, unless you do it withing 24 hours

Recommendation:
    1. Go to 3.1.2.42, or stay on 3.1.2.30
