Getting file info via SQL query?

I've been looking into SQL for some means of reporting Backup and Archive
files, but there seems to be no way to report file attributes such as
file size, last accessed datestamp, last modified timestamp, etc.
Is this information actually unavailable via SQL, or can someone give
an example of the means of displaying that info?
