Thomas,
I see this, but very occasionally. The key to avoiding it, is not having
conficting processes running at the same time. Check what processes are active
when you see the messages and schedule them to run at different times.

Subject: Error writing volume history information
My site is running a 3.1.2.20 ADSM server under OS/390. We see sequences of
messages like the following:
ANR0390W A server database deadlock situation has been
encountered: lock request for transaction 0:9146536 will
be denied to resolve the deadlock.
ANR9999D ICUTIL(1515): Lock acquisition (sLock) failed for
icvhVolumeType 4.
ANR4513E A database lock conflict was encountered in
processing sequential volume history information.
ANR4510E Server could not write sequential volume history
information to 'SZ1.ADSM.SYS1.VOLHIST'.
On average, they are occuring every couple of days. As far as I can tell, the
worst that can happen as a result of these deadlock conditions is missing one
recent volume history record until another update of the sequential file
occurs. Is this conclusion correct? Is there a fix available for the problem?
Even if the problem is essentially harmless, I would prefer to save the time I
spend explaining it to our operations staff when they see these messages.
