You may not need to open the 3494 and manually unload the tapes.
I've seen the same problem (on ADSM 3.1.2.50 / AIX 4.2.1) and have
used the mtlib command to unload the tapes :
mtlib -l /dev/<your library name> -d -f /dev/rmt<?>
