Include the parameter "compressalways no" in your dsm.opt file(s).  The
effect of this is that when *m sees that a file is growing during
compression, it aborts the send, then restarts the same file without
compression.

We also recommend the parameter "nwignorecompressbit yes" for netware 4
servers.  This stops the problems seen when a user (usually accounts)
accesses last years data - netware uncompresses the files and changes the
compression bit, so they all get backed up again
