Yes, the drives are 3590 and I was in the process of doing a move data on the 
volume to return it to the scratch pool. So it appears from your comments the 
cartridge may have problems.

VCR stands for "Vital Cartridge Records".  I would liken it to a tape header
or catalog.  The VCR allows the drive to do fast locates to file positions
on the  cartridge.  I have seen this error before on our 3590 drives.  Is
this what you are using?

The safest thing would be to do a "move data" for that volume to copy the
data to another cartridge.
