We have an STK9710 with 6 9840 drives.  Only one of our clients back up 
directly to
tape and here is its statistics -

                      transfer rate:        15,031.02 KB/sec

We converted from DTL to 9840 a few months ago, and the speed and reliability of
the 9840 have been great.
If you want migration rates, let me know and I can send them to you.
