Thanks to all who've responded.
So,  would  Tivoli Storage Manager's  feature to backup  SAN's   be doing
the same thing for EMC boxes   (non-network backup)   that Upstream does?
So... could I recommend the Tivoli product as doing a comparable function
to the Upstream offering?

The Upstream product on an EMC box is able to do "under the covers"
transfer
of data to the mainframe.  This is a result of the working agreement with
the 2 vendors.  This relieves the TCP/IP network from the data-load.  It
does use the TCP/IP to send metadata (a small portion)
