To clear up a misconception that seems to prevail concerning the
'tapeutil' command...

Because so many of us invoke it simply by name and thence get an
interactive menu, we tend to think that it's an interactive program,
and so unusable in batch mode.  Not so.  As documented in the
"IBM SCSI Tape Drive, Medium Changer, and Library Device Drivers" manuals
(available on the storsys FTP site) the command also works in batch mode if
you give it invocation operands.  Do 'tapeutil -\?' to see that usage.
The command may thus be useful for period captures of sense info or the
like (being careful not to interfere with the drive when it's in use, as
you can test with the 'mtlib' command or the like).
