Using EXCLUDE.DIR

I want to exclude all files and subdirectories under TEST..
My current OPT file has EXCLUDE.DIR *:\TEST
Does this exclude only files directly under TEST or is it achieving what I
want?
Do I need to append a '\' at the end of the statement to get what I want?
