Subject: Re: Unable to Restore NT Registry Key - FYI
All,
I have found my problem!
I am doing a fresh silent install of NT. As many of you NT
hacks knows
this generates a new machine SID. Then when I auto-login as
administrator,
I generate a new user SID based on my machine SID. So when
I tried to
restore the user registry file, the restore failed due to
the fact that
my original SID doesn't match my new SID.
I am now working on a script that will parse my old SID out
of the
backed up registry file and insert it into my new registry.
After that
is done my scripted, silent bare-metal restore will overlay
my original
registry.
The end result of what I am doing will be a fully unattended
bare-metal
restore of Windows NT.

When ADSM Backs up the registry it leaves a copy of it on
the HD under
C:\adsm.sys
Copy x:\adsm.sys\registry\<computername>\Machine\*.*
C:\winnt\system32\config\ ENTER
and then
Copy x:\adsm.sys\registry\<computername>\Users\*.*
C:\winnt\system32\config\ ENTER
x = the original C: drive.
this will work fine if you can boot from a temporary drive.
I take it you are trying to test a restore of the NT system
drive???
