Re: Exchange backup performance

Depends on the configuraton, how many sessions are active etc...
We have recorded speeds up to 9Mb/sec when backing up straight to tape.
Configuration is an RS/6000 S7A Aix. 4.3.2 ADSM 3.1.2.20. 3494 Library with
3590 Tape Drives. Exchange 5.0 WinNT SP4.
ATM Nic running LAN emulation. IP Core is ATM OC-12 622Mb/sec.
However we usually backup to an SSA diskpool and have at least 3 other
concurrent Exchange Backups.
In this configuration we typically get anything between 3-5Mb/sec. All of
the 4 16Gig Exchange Databases will have completed within 1.5hrs.
I think that we're bottlenecking on our NIC Cards. An ATM card has a max
theoretical throuhput of 155mb/s (19Mbytes/sec). However I think that
13Mb/sec is a reasonable assumption for max throughput (70%). That gives a
max throughput of about 45Gigs in 1hour. So if we're backing up 4 Exchange
Databases in an hour and a half, I'd say we've pegged our Nic Card.
We also have a few exchange servers which backup to ADSM 3.1.2.20 running
under MVS OS/390.
Performance is not so good. We don't have an OSA adapter on our mainframe
and instead use SIP routers, which often get congested.
I believe that a lot of the bottleneck is also in TCP/IP running under VTAM.
We have never been able to get good network peformance out of
our mainframe. The latest releases of ADSM were supposed to be able to
multithread IP but we only saw about a 10% improvement.
Typical Connect Agent performance is 1.2- 1.7Mb/sec.

Subject: Exchange backup performance
Hi
Can somebody give me an idea of backup times for exchange servers
using the
ADSM exchange connect agent please? To give you an idea of our
current
scenario, here is some info:
32 gig Exchange database
MS Exchange server 5.5
WinNT 4.0 service pack 4
100 Mbs Full Duplex Ethernet connection
ADSM Server 3.1.2.20 running on MVS OS/390
Disk pool of approx 11 gig
Even if your scenario is radically different, we still want to know
what
sort of throughput is possible.
Thanks very much,
Desigan Moodley
