Did the whole experiment again and yes I had forgotten to mark the
     partition Active.  Now it works like a charm.  Thanks.  Eric

You have to make the partition active via the disk administrator and I
believe this is only possible when it is the "D" drive. Change the current D
drive to another letter and than allocate D to your restored disk.
