Be very careful when sharing the 3494 if you want to keep your volsers clean.  I
have three ADSM Servers sharing one 3494 and it can be a pain.  Especially if
you use the DR manager.  What I have found is that 1) Be careful to checkout
Database Backups.  If you do not, and they expire while in the ATL, they will
disappear from ADSM.  Then if you run a mass checkin on any server, those tapes
may be taken inappropriately.  2) When checking volumes in using search=yes,
even if you specify a range of tapes, ADSM may grab tapes you meant to go to the
other servers.  3) Perhaps the biggest problem is when one server is dangerously
low on tapes.  If you have extra in another server, the temptation is to use
them.  I have had to do that and it becomes very hard to clean up that mess...

     OK, so a shared system might be able to perform a
     mtlib -l/dev/lmcp# -qI
     and get a list of all volumes within the ATL BUT unless you have
     inserted volumes and just left them with the insert category "FF00"
     they won't be able to check them into their system... the library
     manager will tell them they are already in use...

     They would maybe by chance be able to force change a category and
     screw things up...

     I believe this boils down to a case of "have to trust them"

Am I able to share the 3494 between multiple systems and DENY access to
volumes of different servers, even if all systems are able to access the
mtlib cmd?

I know I have to use different categories, but I want to share my 3494
with another company, so I have to control that they are definitively
not able to mount my tapes.

Any Ideas?
