of course switching to a faster network is something one should keep on a todo
list for the next years. Even the very conservative German banks are (at least
in der data centers) using 100Mbps Ethernet and faster stuff or are thinking
about using it. Next step would be SAN (storage area network), but that's
another topic and until now ADSM seems a little bit behind on that one.
To come back to your problems. AFAIK from several discussions besides the Token
Ring one possible bottleneck will be the "slow" client that has to "select" the
files to be restored. To speed up that process many people do regular "archives"
(which restore much faster since it's a kind of single "image"). Also using
multiple parallel Clients on your files servers (one for each physical disk) may
speed up the client until the TR is the bottleneck.
Sorry, but Ih think nobody can offer you a "real" solution based on your
environmental limitations.
