You only get to compress once.  So if you do it on the client, then you
won't do it on the tape.  Actually, compressing already compressed data can
cause the data to grow.  I would guess that's what you're seeing.

Never, never, never (OK, maybe sometimes) compress on the client.  Hardware
compression is most always better.  If you ahve very fast clients, and very
slow networks, then compress on the client, but not otherwise.
