In the past (for a price) IBM could pull the data off the tape...
I believe this is still offered and if the data is critical enough you
should check with your IBM rep.

I am wondering if it is possible to accessed data on a tape where the volume
is unreadable.
Using AUDIT VOL xxx FIX=yes will get around unreadable sections on a tape,
but if the volume label is unreadable, you appear to be screwed.
