We had a similar problem with this trying to get Jumpstart installs working
which rely on BASEDIR being respected. The install of the code works fine,
respecting -R as it should - its the postinstall script that doesn't.

We repackage the client to not call the postinstall script and take care of
all the linking it does in our own script which does implement BASEDIR. I
can send the appropriate bits of this if you like.

I raised this with IBM and the good folks at Mainz cut some code that should
take care of it and sent it to me to test via our salesman. Unfortunately
that never happened due to lots of other things that seem to get in the way
when you have solution that works and people prioritizing other things.

This was at 3.1.0.3 btw, we're not Jumpstarting 3106 yet.
