Martijn - The SIGTTOU you are having under AIX *may* relate to
AIX APAR IX69086 or the like.
You may want to try the nohup operation under Tcsh, which unlike
other shells has nohup as a built-in command rather than using
the /usr/bin/nohup executable. Experiment and try to narrow down
