Rick, you can use server-to-server, or more precisely, virtual volumes in an
MVS server and HP server environment. The MVS server can store the HP server
DRM data on the devices used by the MVS server (3590, VTS, whatever), and the
HP server can store the MVS server DRM data on its devices (3590, VTS with SCSI
support, DLT, 8mm (yecch!), whatever). A disaster recovery scenario means that
you rebuild the ADSM server that failed from the server that survived. For
example if the MVS server failed, quickly get a S/390 such as a Multiprise,
attach it to the surviving HP server via a fast network link such as FDDI or
ATM, and restore the database so that you can get the ADSM for MVS server back
in operation. The approach to a failed HP server and recovery from an MVS
server is a similar recovery scenario. Note that DRM in ADSM 3.1.2.0 has
additional support for virtual volumes compared to ADSM 3.1.

If your DRM environment is using tapes to DRM data, note that you cannot switch
platforms for the server. For example if your have an ADSM for MVS server and
it uses 3590 tapes for offsite cartridge storage for disaster recovery, you
must rebuild an ADSM for MVS server. Even though AIX, SUN, HP, and NT based
ADSM servers can use 3590, they cannot be used to recover an ADSM for MVS
server, i.e. you cannot restore the database of an ADSM for MVS server on AIX
and hope to build an ADSM for AIX server. The same comment holds true for any
other combination of ADSM platforms. Therefore, use the virtual volume
capability in a mixed server platform environment as described above and you
will have a very flexible recovery capability in the event of a disaster.

Hello,
I have a very unique question. I'm currently looking at Disaster
Recovery. ADSM is running on an MVS system. I'm hoping is to use a HP unix
machine as a stand by disaster recovery ADSM server. Is this at all possible?
If it is how can this be done? If not, what prevents it and is their any way
around this problem? I believe some of the problems include MVS reads and
writes data differently than HP, the directory structures are different, the
internal tape labels, etc. Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
