Sandye,

The answer is 'yes' provided that Server B uses the same or similar type of
filesystem as Server A. In general, NT, OS/2 Win95 and DOS clients can all
restore to each other. However, for example, a Macintosh client can't
restore data on behalf of an NT client. I'm not sure how Novell fits in
here and I don't have any clue about how Unix systems work with each other.
So, you'll have to determine whether the file systems are compatible. If
you're not sure, post another question to the list on that subject.

Assuming file system compatibility, there are two methods: the
"front-door" and the "back-door".

The front-door method assumes that the operator of Server A has
specifically authorized Server B to restore its files. That is done (using
a V3 client) via either the GUI (Utilities/User Access List) or the command
'set access'. Then, Server B must use GUI option Utilities/Access Another
User or the -fromnode parameter on the 'restore' command to specify that
they want to restore Server A's files.

The back-door method involves overriding the NODENAME parameter, either in
Server B's DSM.OPT file or by specifying the -NODE= parameter as an
invocation property of the DSM(C).EXE program. Using this method, Server B
effectively becomes Server A (from an ADSM point of view) and can do the
restore without making any other changes. Server B's operator must enter
Server A's ADSM password, however.

I hope that helps you out.

Subject: Restoring files of one client to another

My thanks to Stephen Daniell and Jennifer Cunniningham for their help on
my previous problem. As you probably have guessed, I am new to all this
and have been thrown in to ADSM, sink or swim. So far I am managing to
keep my head above water but that's all. I have to spend time
researching everything and I really don't have that much time. So here
goes........ I have a client that wants to restore files backed up on
one server to a completely different server. Can this be done and if so
how?
Much thanks,
Sandye J. Jackson
