Just a guess, but it sounds like you put the tape back in the wrong slot.
If you don't know which slot it belongs in, you can do the following:

1. checkout libvol <libname> <volser> remove=no checkl=no
2. checkin  libvol <libname> <volser> stat={priv|scratch} checkl=no

This will cause ADSM to select an appropriate slot and, more to the point,
tell you what it is.  Using checkl=no is optional, but is a timesaver.
