You only get to compress data once.  Most tape technologies compress data
and will do so more efficiently than software.  If you have slow networks,
limited disk pool and fast clients, perhaps compression is for you.  I've
seen a relatively fast NetWare client run with compression and without.
 Elapsed backup time was actually faster without compression.

In general, I would let the tape hardware compress data.
