STK9714 Labeling Tapes

Has anyone had any luck labeling DLT7000 tapes using ADSM version 3.1.0.2 with
NT 4.0 service pack 3

I can not get the ADSM server to label all the tapes with I/O errors being
generated.

They are random and never the same,, I have used Dsmlabel, Label Libvol and the
Server Utils GUI.

Do you have to format or erase a tape before ADSM can label it, I understand
the labeling process to take care of the format.
