I sympathize with your frustration over the masking characters - I've had
similar problems at times.

I conducted a little test doing what I think you're attempting to do. First,
I don't think the DOMAIN option addresses anything other than drive letters.
At least that's how I'm reading the documentation. Normally ADSM defaults to
automatically backing up all locally attached drives. If you had a drive C:
and a drive D: on your machine and only wanted to back up the C: drive you
would add the option

DOMAIN C:

and ADSM would only back up the C: drive, instead of both C: and D:

The test I did - I created two subdirectories under a directory I have called
ADSMtemp. The path was C:\ADSMTemp\snapshot\snapshot2

The subdirectory ADSMTemp has several files in it. I added a file to
C:\ADSMTemp\snapshot called test.fil and I added a file to
C:\ADSMTemp\snapshot\snapshot2 called test2.fil.

My options file contained the exclude statement:

exclude c:\...\snapshot\...\*

When I ran an incremental backup the directory structure
c:\ADSMTemp\snapshot\snapshot2 was backed up but none of the files under the
subdirectories snapshot and snapshot2 were. Files that were not under
snapshot or snapshot2 WERE backed up.

Note there is no period in front of snapshot or snapshot2. Also, I don't
know if it makes a difference or not but I'm using "back-slashes" not
"forward-shlashes" as you used in your example. Your example also doesn't
show the drive letter. Either the drive letter or another masking character
for the drive letter is required. The exclude statement must contain a
complete path.

Give it another shot and see what happens. I really do understand your
frustration. If you still have problems, I'll be happy to try something else
to help you out. Good luck.

Subject: more specifically: excluding netapp snapshots

I'll try this one more time and be as specific as I can:

ADSM v3
Sunos 5.x
network appliance backups with snap enabled

I am backing up with 'DOMAIN /net/napp2/' to back up the whole netapp.

I am trying to exclude all files and directories in the snapshot
directories... otherwise you end up backing up the same files multiple
times.

The following DOES NOT work:
exclude /../.snaphot/.../*
exclude.dir /.../.snaphot/.../*

I have also tried:
exclude /../\.snaphot/.../*
exclude.dir /.../\.snaphot/.../*

thinking that the dot could be getting confused with the pattern match
operator.

Has anyone successfully done this?
