You can make any client go direct to tape.

Each client is assigned to a policy domain.
The domain has one or more management classes;
the management class has a "backup copy group".
The definition for the backup copy group points to a storage pool
The storage pool can be your tape storage pool instead of your disk
storage pool.

You can either change the assignment of the client so that it belongs to
a different policy domain/management class, or you can specify a
management class in the incl/excl list in your client's dsm.opt file.

The only drawback is that when a client is using the tape drive, no
other clients can be using the tape drive - make sure you don't start
too many direct-to-tape backups at once!

        Has anyone ever heard if it is possible to direct connect a
client
        to the tape drives for better throughput and avoiding the
network?

        HP Client/Sun Server attached to a 9710 Tape Library....Thanks
