I contacted IBM about this and they asked me to run dsmc with the
trace option and start a scheduled backup. I did what they asked and
guess what? The client made a perfectly good backup!!! Still gasping
for air I tried to run a scheduled backup without the trace
and it too ran without any problem.
I'm not able to reproduce the error anymore now, but before I ran the
dsmc with the trace the error occurred *every time* I tried to
run a scheduled backup. Only 30 minutes before the trace I was able to
reproduce it by starting a scheduled backup of that node.
I don't know what happened (and neither did the IBM representative),
but I'm sure running dsmc with a trace did something.
