I haven't been able to keep up with this list lately, so apoligies if I'm
covering ground that has already be covered here. I just happened to
see Keith's note amidst the hundreds of unread ADSM-L notes. :-P

I attended the IBM International Storage Symposium last month in San
Francisco. The question of HSM support for AIX came up a number of times.
For what it's worth, IBM stated (repeatedly) that they were aware of the
issue, that they in no way intend to decommit from HSM on AIX, and are
working to get HSM out. Ok, I know.. what did you expect to hear, eh?
But the other thing that was mentioned was that some future release of
AIX (4.3?) was supposed to have a DMAPI interface built into it. I was
not familiar with this API, and still do not know what the "DM" stands
for, but I did find out that this provides an API that allows HSM products
to be plugged into your system. When this is available, expect to see
(1) other products which provide HSM solutions for AIX, and (2) I would
think that this would help a great deal in providing HSM support for
future versions of AIX (beyond 4.3). After all, if the API does not
change, then the HSM product should continue to work, right?

Also, I think it is important to note that recent releases of AIX have
had major changes in the filesystem arena. >2GB files and filesystems
have been introduced in these recent releases. I would not expect this
type of major filesystem change in every future release of AIX, so I would
think that bringing HSM forward would be less of a headache to the
developers.
