No need to write your own. What you want to do is issue the command:

      Delete VOLHIST Today-nn Type=all

This will delete all entries in the volume history file that are older
than
nn days old - you can pick a number that is appropriate for your shop,
obviously. There are also options on the Type= parm - check your admin
reference. We run this command from a scheduled admin command each day,
and
delete after 22 days. This allows us to have at least 2 full sets of
backup
tapes and volume history info available at any time.

It is not necessary to keep volume history info back longer, as long as
you
have an adequate DB backup strategy in place.

Hello ADSMers,

Has anyone out there come up with a script to parse the Volume History
file in order to determine how far back you can go with a DELETE VOLHIST
TYPE=ALL, and not affect any volumes currently in use? I was about to
attempt this by trying to match STGNEW and STGDELETE entries in a (I'm
assuming) complicated AWK program, but I am hoping someone out there has
already done (and tested) this.

We have entries in our volume history from over two years ago. Even
entries for 3490E tapes which we got rid of months ago, and there doesn't
seem to be any way to easily remove them.

Thanks for any help.
