We do a lot of data management on our mainframe, but we have 3
physically separate, non-bridged networks, which do not all have
connections to the mainframe. So instead of putting ADSM on the
mainframe, we were pretty much forced to leave it out in the network.

We have 3 ADSM servers on RS6000 J30's, each with an STK 9710 robotic
library, which is a tiny rectangular version of the big silos. I am an
MVS bigot, but I think ADSM on AIX with the 9710's is totally cool.

One advantage of using the 9710 is that you can use the DLT 7000
cartridges, which hold 35 GB (70 compressed GB) and the drives from STK
still have a 6mb/sec transfer rate.

Another advantage (for some people, anyway) is that by putting ADSM out
on the network, you eliminate the gateway to MVS as a source of
performance and/or availability problems.

We run the ADSM Enhanced Server product, which is essentially a
front-end to ADSM that provides device drivers for the STK
3490-compatible or DLT drives, and also provides the interface to ACSLS.
In that configuration, you should be able to have ADSM share your big
silos. Talk to your STK rep.

We are currently backing up about 20 servers, 90 desktops on the busiest
ADSM, in the process of expanding to 350 clients. We are using 27 GB of
disk in an external cablinet, 2 drives used for data base and mirror,
the other used for storage pools. We will be replacing that with 30 GB
of RAID-type disk shortly.

Our networks are 16MB token ring, and we have never had any type of
performance problem. I have never been able to significantly stress
either the RS6000 J30 or the 9710. However, we don't do backups of huge
files or data bases, just normal desktop-type file systems.
