A customer needs to make online backups in Sybase servers running SCO
Unix. We have proposed a solution using a RISC 39H connected to a 3494,
as an ADSM server, and ADSM clients in the SCO Unix servers. To make
the online backups, the dump tool from Sybase must be used, and it can
dump to a flat file or a tape device.
Does ADSM create a virtual tape device in the clients, i.e., does
ADSM create any /dev/<virtual_tape>, that can be used as the output
device for the dump tool? Is there any special requirement to use this
solution?
Is there other solution to this problem, in case we cannot use the
/dev/<virtual_tape>?
Another way to do it would be NFS exporting the server disk to the
clients, and dumping the flat file to this NFS disk, and later using
ADSM to backup the flat file to the 3494. NFS have some performance
issues, can it be reliable?
   Regards,
    Cesar
