Actually, I am the "Brett in client dev" ;-)

You could try using Fetch (an FTP program) to transfer a large directory.
This might show the problem, though it is hard to be sure.  From the other
information from the PMR, its starting to sound like a hardware issue.  It
wouldn't suprise me if there was an incompatability with the TokenRing card
and that particular machine.

If I come up with any other suggestions, I'll let you know.
