We saw this during a disaster recovery test when we tried to use Version
1 client code to restore files backed up with Version 2 client code. The
sequence of events that led to this was as follows:

Install Version 1 client
Create mksysb tape
Upgrade to Version 2 client
Run some backups
Restore mksysb tape at test site
Attempt to restore files outside root volume group with ADSM at test site

Because we forgot to create a new mksysb tape after the client upgrade,
we ended up with Version 1 client code when we used the mksysb tape to
restore the root volume group. This client code was unable to restore
files backed up after the client upgrade. Fortunately, we had a set of
Version 2 install material on hand and were able to redo the client
upgrade at the disaster recovery test site. I know of no way to fix
this kind of problem other than upgrading the client software again.
