What you say is true, however, consider this.  ADSM is only going to
backup changed files.  Netware will not recompress files until a
specified amount of time passes (we have this set to 2 days).
Therefore, the files being backed up will benefit from compression and
the compressed files don't need backing up.

In other words, if the file compression delay is longer than your ADSM
backup frequency, ADSM compression should be a benefit.  It depends on
the data, though, as you pointed out.  If you have a lot of ZIPs or
JPGs, they are not going to benefit from ADSM compression.  I guess it
goes back to "Know thy data."

My point is that sometimes it is not obvious that on a Netware server
the lion's share of the data to be backed up has NOT been compressed by
Netware.

Don't forget to set the "nwignorecomp yes" parm in the opt file.
