It sounds as if you are thinking in terms of copying the 1000 or so
on-site tapes to a similar number of off-site tapes each time an
offsite backup is done. Copy pools don't have to be used this way.
The first BACKUP STGPOOL operation will do a massive amount of
file copying. Subsequent BACKUP STGPOOL operations will only copy
files that are not already in the copy pool. In addition, if you
execute a BACKUP STGPOOL from a disk storage pool to a copy pool,
migrate data from disk to tape, and do a BACKUP STGPOOL from primary
tape pool to copy pool, files that were copied from the disk pool
by the first BACKUP will not be recopied by the second. If BACKUP and
migration operations are scheduled appropriately, most of the copy
pool updating can be done by copying data from disk to tape, with
little need for tape to tape copies.
