I will admit to being a big Tom Clancy fan, and also of techno-thrillers, but
I will admit to being a big Tom Clancy fan, and also of techno-thrillers, but
what I have just seen would make Tom wonder...... Maybe I should tell him
about ADSM? Here is what happened.

I was scanning the log this AM, and found messages indicating that a copypool
tape was eligible to be reclaimed, but couldn't because it was offsite and
contained the only copy of some files. Sure enough, I looked at the tape via
a Q content, and it had exactly 1 file left on it - a Notes database (.NSF).
I also saw a message indicating that we had a damaged tape. I looked at it,
and lo and behold, it contained 1 file - the same .NSF file. This sounded
like a perfect setup for RESTORE MAN. (What were you expecting - someone from
the CIA?)

So, I made the Offsite tape available, by doing an Update Volume
access=readonly command. The one file occupied .4% of the tape, and so, since
this was below the reclaim threshold, a Reclaim was spun off.

As soon as the reclaim completed, I reset the damaged tape from unavailable to
readonly, and then started the Restore volume. The Damaged tape was marked as
"destroyed" by the process, but then I received the following messages from
the process....

03/13/1997 07:35:13 ANR1232I Restore of volumes in primary storage pool
TISDSERV_PTAPE started as process 221.
03/13/1997 07:35:13 ANR1235I Restore process 221 ended for volumes in
storage pool TISDSERV_PTAPE.
03/13/1997 07:35:13 ANR1240I Restore of volumes in primary storage pool
TISDSERV_PTAPE has ended. Files Restored: 0, Bytes Restored: 0, Unreadable
Files: 0, Unreadable Bytes: 0.
03/13/1997 07:35:13 ANR1256W Volume 383791 contains files that could not
be restored.

Ah ha, I thought - there must have been a spanned file and I missed something
earlier, so I went and did a preview on the restore command, and got very
similar messages:

03/13/1997 07:38:44 ANR1233I Restore preview of volumes in primary
storage pool TISDSERV_PTAPE started as process 222.
03/13/1997 07:38:45 ANR1235I Restore process 222 ended for volumes in
storage pool TISDSERV_PTAPE.
03/13/1997 07:38:45 ANR1241I Restore preview of volumes in primary
storage pool TISDSERV_PTAPE has ended. Files Restored: 0, Bytes Restored: 0.
03/13/1997 07:38:45 ANR1256W Volume 383791 contains files that could not
be restored.

Now wait a minute - the file was here 5 minutes ago before I did the reclaim.
So, I went back and looked at the log for the reclaim of the original tape
(314459).....(Note - this has been editied to remove unrelated messages).

  03/13/1997 07:29:51 ANR1040I Space reclamation started for volume 314459,
storage pool TISDCOPY_S (process number 220).
  03/13/1997 07:29:52 ANR1044I Removable volume 314459 is required for
space reclamation.
03/13/1997 07:29:52 ANR5216I CARTRIDGE 314459 is expected to be mounted
(R/O).
  03/13/1997 07:31:37 ANR5209I Dismounting volume 314459 (read-only
access).
   03/13/1997 07:32:02 ANR1041I Space reclamation ended for volume 314459.
  03/13/1997 07:32:26 ANR5220I Deleting CARTRIDGE 314459 from Storage Pool
TISDCOPY_S.
03/13/1997 07:32:26 ANR1341I Scratch volume 314459 has been deleted from
storage pool TISDCOPY_S.

Nothing strange here - seems normal enough. So now I am really puzzled.
Before the reclaimation was run, there was one file on the original tape
314459. The reclaim processed normally, but now the file seems to be missing
and I can't restore the damaged tape.

Can anyone suggest what is going on here?

BTW, at the same time there was a backup process running that was moving files
to the same copypool. Is it possible that the missing file went to a tape
that was mounted for another process? I would think not, but I have heard of
stranger things.

As always, me server is MVS, at V2.1.0.7

Oh yes - I can never figure out what Tom Clancy is up to in his books either.
