Since that time we have not seen any major impacts - we are somewhere around
700 users now, with a leaning towards servers. We do ask people to use some
common sense about some things - as you mentioned, we don't install large
bunches of new clients at one time, but rather phase them in - actually this w
orks out "naturally" since the LAN admin just does a few each day. The
problem, though, is that new users seem to want to watch the thing run!
(These must be very dull people!), and so they start it up during the day anyw
ay. :-( But even this has caused no problems. And we have also run
several tests with full restores during the day, and this has caused us no
slow response problems either.

As I think about it, the acid test was last October, when daylight savings
time changed, and we had a bunch of level 3 Win95 clients that decided to do
full backups. General network traffic was not effected, although I had people
complaining about the extra backups. The average session was elongated
because the server as overwhelmed, though.

As for Concurrent sessions, we use the installed defaults - 25 sessions on
MVS. I did up the % for scheduled sessions to 60%, though, as I ran into
trouble a couple of times with rejected sessions when I could see no other
problems.

We do set up 2 primary backup schedules - one for desktop users that runs from
midnight to 9 AM, and a second for Laptop users that of course runs during the
day (7 AM to 2 PM). The bulk of our people still have desktop machines, and
so the activity occurs between 12 and 3 AM. I have servers set to run in the
early evening (after 8:00 PM), although a few wait until after midnight due to
databases being online.

And lastly, the attached note was concerned about comparisons with
alreadybacked up files - ADSM only passes back the key information that it
uses to determine if a file has changed - date/time etc. It does not compare
files (or it would have to mount every tape in the house!) , so while there is
some "backwards" traffic, it is minimal.

I'm new to adsm so I could have this wrong.
but even though during an incremental the amount of data can be small,
don't you still need to consider the traffic going the other way, i.e.,
the server sending from the database the image of the client to compare
in preparation for the incremental, this burst at the beginning could be
larger than the incremental.
