DELETE ON RESTORE ? ?
Go back to your boss and ask... "If some other user lost a file and it
is restored and between the time that user lost their file and the
restore was done your boss added 50 new files at 1GB each, WOULD HE
WANT THOSE NEW FILES DUSTED JUST BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT THERE WHEN THE
LAST BACKUP RAN....?"
I'm old MVS and haven't caught up on all the AIX tricks but I would
guess there would be some means close to an alternate sysres volume
where you could restore to and point the system for the next IPL...
not exactly sure how it could be done... BUT ANYWAY #1 requirement of
ADSM... You have a functional operating system & ADSM loaded... In the
world of AIX there is always makesysb
How can they trust the data is good.... 'bout the same as knowing
that in vi when you :wq that you have a good copy out on disk... you
can carry the paranoia to any extream, you can even re-read & compare
the backup data until you generate a read error either on the actual
data or the backup copy... (there are error routines in adsm)
I'm sorry if I'm sounding like I'm flaming here but it sounds like
what the boss wants/needs is to run triple mirrors, two local and one
over fiber to a bunker a couple miles away (with no door to the
outside and a depleted uranium sheild over the fiber...)
I'll shut up now...

Hello,
the leader of one of our departments has some
serious questions about the functionality of ADSM.
He has some very special needs, that I think ADSM
is not able to fullfill.
I want to be sure and would be glad, if you could
answer the following question:
1. Does ADSM support "delete on restore"?
He wants to analyze the following scenario:
His system disk crashed, he installs the new system from CD.
Before the crash he deleted /usr/lib/sendmail and used
/usr/local/sendmail instead. After the new installation
the old /usr/lib/sendmail exists again. Now he starts an
ADSM restore of the /usr file system. Will ADSM delete
the now existing /usr/lib/sendmail, because it's not
on the backup?
How can he restore the system to exact the same state
as it was before the crash?
2. How can he be sure that the saved data on a backup medium
is identical to the local data? How can he trust the log
files? Maybe the head of the tape drive is defect,
ADSM says that the backup completed successfully?
Is it possible for him to verify his backed up data?
3. How can he manage that the password isn't stored on
the client's local disk, but automatic backup can be
scheduled for late night?
Thanks very much in advance.
