If we did that, then this would not allow you to automate your DB backups,
unless you code the parameter with either "OVERWRITE=YES" or "OVERWRITE=NO".
(this is a hypothetical parameter based on your suggestion.)

If you chose the latter, your BACKUP DB commands would fail. A retry
mechanism would be too cumbersome. If you chose the former, it would defeat
the purpose of protecting you from over-writing your previous database backups.
And if you *did* automatically over-write a previous backup, you wouldn't
be very happy if you needed to restore your database, only to discover that
you just over-wrote your last full backup.

I'd suspect that the opportunity to automate the retention of database backups
has not been lost on development. However, I do not know what, if any plans
there are to do this.
