Kevin,

I had the same question about a year ago. Below is the response that I
received from IBM. It is very important to note that these return codes are
NOT reliable.

" ... the return codes are not described anywhere and since they cannot
be relied upon, the text is misleading in this way."

Also note the following from apar ic11804:

"The return code from the execution of any of the ADSM
executables (except the ADSM API) cannot be relied upon, and is not
consistent and is therefore not documented. We will take this APAR as a
suggestion to make the return codes from the ADSM executables more
reliable, or to at least always return a negative return code if a
failure occurred, in a future release. We will also document that the
return codes from executables cannot be relied upon. We do log errors
in the error log and the schedule log, and these are what you should
rely upon. We want to address this in a future release, but have two
difficulties: first, the ADSM client today can return from different
layers and places in the code, and would require a significant redesign.
Second, customers have different opinions of what constitutes a failure.
If a schedule or incremental backup completes but has certain files that
failed, the DSMC SCHEDULE or INCREMENTAL commands did complete
successfully. Some customers would want a good return code, and some
would want a failure return code. It is the same if the files were
excluded. That is why we use the logs instead. The logs have all the
information, which can be used in whatever way the customer wants,
depending on the customer's interpretation of failure and success. If
we are able to implement the customer's suggestion in a future release,
the client scheduler would be the most likely area that we could
redesign in conjunction with the ADSM server and give back meaningful
return codes."

I hope this helps.
