Let me try to clarify the 2 gigabyte file limitation, which has now
been lifted with client PTF 6:
There was both a client restriction and a server restriction that prevented
the ADSM backup/archive clients from backing up/restoring files >= 2 gigabytes
on platforms that supported files of that size. The server problem was
fixed about six months ago. The clients have now been redesigned with PTF 6
and the 2 Gb client restriction has been lifted on most platforms that
support files greater than 2 gigabytes.
The following b/a clients now support files 2 Gb or greater with PTF 6:
AIX 4.2, Novell NetWare, Digital UNIX, and Windows NT.
In addition, we had a problem with the client backup statistics, where
once you backed up more than 4 Gigabytes on platforms that allowed that, your
statistics wrapped back to 0. That problem was also fixed in client PTF 6.
Client PTF 6 is available now on the anonymous FTP server and its shadow sites,
(index.storsys.ibm.com), and will be available on media this month.
One note: certain operating systems such as Windows 16-bit and Mac,
cannot give accurate information to applications such as ADSM about
files larger than 2 gigabytes. We recommend that you do not remote-mount files
greater than 2 gigabytes from clients other than the four that support > 2 Gb.
While ADSM will attempt to prevent a backup of these files, we are at the
mercy of the operating system information, and a 2.2 Gb file may be reported
to us by the operating system as a 200 Mb file, so we may try to back it up
and then fail, on platforms that do not support > 2 Gb files.
